Opening Day

I'm ready to open one of my winter sowing milk jugs!

Beautiful! These are the Abe Lincoln heirloom tomatoes

These are some other tomatoes I bought
at our local family owned garden store. A couple are suppose

to do well here in hot and humid Texas - Solar Fire and Tycoon.
They are "heat set" tomatoes. I'm trying the method of laying
them on their side until they start growing upward.
Then will plant. More photos to come of this
process.
I just love these - Variegated Aguga - a perennial. This is a sloped flower bed and
the soil kept washing down the hill. So I planted
these along with Liriope to help with this problem. It's working!

Elainealope Iris Blooming In June

I knew Elainealope iris was a rebloomer, but here in North Central
Texas, I've never had one rebloom for me. I guess
the conditions were just right this year. I went
out this morning to look at the garden and this nice
little surprise was waiting for me.

Newberry Festival is such a gorgeous cranberry color and
has very large flowers. It is a late bloomer, which extends
the daylily bloom season.

This is Savannah Debutante, a double daylily, and also a late bloom
variety.

Here are some photos of other pairings for white
zinnia. This is the first year I've grown Bachelor Buttons.
I can see the beautiful blue color from my kitchen
window. I think it shows up because it is in front of the white zinnia.

You can't see in this photo, (it's not in bloom right now)
but on the right of the zinnias is the Double Delight rose
and on the left is the Red Knockout.

A returning sunflower. I just love
the rust color on it.

We planted tomatoes again this year. This is by far the largest
one  to date that we have harvested, an heirloom, Boxcar Willie, which
we also grew last year. We decided not to try the
Black Krim again, it just seemed to have a lot of problems
with blossom end rot.

Savannah Debutante Daylily and Tomato Taste Test

Savannah Debutante daylily. This is a double daylily with 6" blooms
and a rebloomer. It's a little more peachy color than
than the photo shows.

Another shot of Fuchsia Dreams daylily

On the left  is Black Krim Heirloom tomato and on the right is
 Boxcar Willie Heirloom tomato.
In our opinion, we think Boxcar Willie wins the taste test over
Black Krim but Black Krim does have a good flavor.

We've had a lot of trouble with
Black Krim - cracking and blossom end rot.
I've done some research on blossom end rot and found

it can be caused by a calcium deficiency or  heat and
erratic watering. The website recommended
adding crushed egg shells or Tums when planting. We
also have Celebrity, Better Boy, Arkansas Traveler Heirloom and
Old German Heirloom. I'll do a taste test on them later.
The turtle came back yesterday and was banished again,
but this morning we found another eaten tomato.

So I guess he/she is back.
