An August Day In The Garden

The coleus that I potted from pinched tops are
coming along nicely. I will
eventually put these by my front door.
Bloom on "William Shakespeare 2000" David Austin English rose.
It's growing right in the middle of the
zinnia patch.
Purple Fountain grass. I just love
when sun shines through
it in the mornings. Comes across
as golden shimmery lights.
I moved the decorative
bird house over here. The birds

have been eating on the sunflowers.
If you look closely, in the middle of the photo
is a tiny crepe myrtle growing. I took an offshoot
of the mother plant last fall from my old
house and kept it in the garage all winter.
 It was about an inch
high. I planted it in the cantaloupe patch
because I didn't know yet where I wanted to
put it permanently and I didn't want the mower to
get it. It is now 6 inches tall and has flower buds on it.
This variety is "Dynamite", a brilliant red.

Small purple flower on the liriope.
Here are some snapdragons I grew from seed.
I'm hoping they will bloom in the fall.
This morning's little harvest. The melon on the right
is "Charentais". This is the first one I have
been able to bring in the house to eat. I've thrown about 6 out to
the rabbits. The bugs have been getting
them just as soon as they are ripe, but not this one.
I got two little tiny bell peppers - hey it's hot here. I
guess you could call them "bite-size".  I
will mix this okra with yesterdays harvest and cook up
some fried okra tonight.

Not Your Grandmother's Zinnias

Finally have some of the lemon colored sunflowers
starting to bloom. Now I'm
waiting on the reddish brown ones to
bloom.

Moonlit Masquerade Daylily

Moonlit Masquerade daylily. This one is new to the garden
and the first day it has bloomed.

I moved one of my Lady Finger daylily clumps over to the shade garden.
In Texas daylilies can stand a little shade. In my old
garden I had this planted under a Dawn Redwood tree.

More white zinnias are opening. I still haven't seen
the red ones or red/white striped.

A gladiola that came up was planted by the previous gardener.

A little bird lives in the bird house.

Morning Glory planted by previous gardener. Seedlings have been
 coming up everywhere.

My first daylily to bloom in a pot.
I have been trying to grow a daylily in a pot and succeeded this year.
I would one day like to have a daylily farm.

First time I have seen/grown rosy pink nastursiums.

Old Fashioned Maiden - a spider daylily with 6" blooms

Star Struck daylily, a rebloomer with 7" booms

At the moment I've lost the name of this one. I will have to hunt for it.
This is the most
beautiful color of orange I have seen yet.

Paper Butterfly Daylily

Paper Butterfly Daylily. This gets to be around 24" tall with 6" blooms and is a rebloomer.  In my previous yard I had this planted with Southern Wood fern behind it and heuchera "Caramel" (coral bells) in front of it. Later in the season I will move this over by the shade garden and do the same with it as before.

This is Northfield Daylily. It is 36" tall with 5" blooms and also a rebloomer. Warrior Prince is in the background.

Evolution Salvia with lambs ear

Red Volunteer daylily. Again my camera doesn't capture the beauty of this red. I think it is my favorite of the red daylilies. It gets around 30" tall with 7" blooms.

Wishing for an English Garden in Texas

I love English gardens. My garden themes for the last 14 years have been about trying to integrate that style into a Texas garden. It is a real challenge.  Recently went to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The gardens were just beautiful. I've included a couple of photos. One is of a mystery shrub that I would like to have. Can anyone identify this? I guess I will take the photo to the local garden center and see if they can tell me what it is.

A Gusty Day

I had planned to add lots of compost to the rest of my unplanted vegetable garden today, but the wind has been so crazy, up to 45-50 mph gusts, I didn't get it done. I went about tying things down.

This is a Pink Drift Rose with Purple Fountain Grass.
I am helping my daughter-in-law with her front
yard landscaping. These will be going to her house.

Another shot of the drift rose

This is the first day the Footloose iris bloomed. I will have to be
sure and label it.  I plan on moving it later.
